The gate of the Cevennes

The gate of the Cevennes

Alès looks at the horizon with one eye on the sea, the other on the Cevennes. It is also called “Porte des Cévennes” (gate of the Cévennes). The Cévennes, which carry the salty air of the Mediterranean over the squares and the markets, bustling with life, colors and sun.

The fountains and flower boxes on the streets and squares give a festive cachet to this former mining town. Cultural events are held throughout the year: a comic strip festival in March, a film festival in April, and the youth theater festival in July. The theater “Le Cratére” can accommodate 1000 visitors, the largest in the region.
